Virgin Gorda

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands and boasts an unspoilt coastline of hundreds of bays and coves offering secluded and beautiful beaches to holidaymakers and the many yachts visiting the Region.

Gorda is a tropical paradise, mostly untouched by tourism development and is just less than nine square miles in size. The island's resorts are luxurious and discreet, staffed almost entirely by local residents, and blending gently into the idyllic surroundings.

Named by Christopher Columbus, the island's name means 'Fat Virgin' as the shape of the island resembles that of a reclining woman with a large stomach. The heavy belly is the island's central high point, known as Gorda Peak, from which lush indigenous vegetation criss-crossed with numerous trails spreads down to the coast and the azure sea.

A multitude of tropical beaches offer visitors to Virgin Gorda the opportunity to relax on sun kissed shores by the warm waters of the Caribbean and for those who wish to explore the natural highlights of the island The Baths, situated on the southern shores are a jumble of huge granite stones worthy of exploration. The boulders have formed fascinating grottoes, tunnels, arches and pools: a playground for exploring and snorkelling.

Spanish Town is the main town on the island and offers a typically Caribbean atmosphere, with laid-back tranquillity and the chance to explore the many shops (from beach wear to local crafts) at a leisurely pace. There are also numerous restaurants, most with catchy names like 'Mad Dog' and 'Sip & Dip', serving up the delicious local cuisine, including unsurpassed lobster feasts.

Virgin Gorda is a small and unspoilt tropical island in the Caribbean, which offers luxurious and relaxing holidays on sun kissed beaches. It is also the site of one of the British Virgin Island's most famous attractions, known as The Baths. Gigantic boulders lie strewn along the island's spectacular beaches forming picturesque tidal pools and magical grottos that invite hours of exploration, swimming and snorkelling. The fascinating rock formations were caused by volcanic activity thousands of years ago and today are the most visited natural wonder in the Region. Virgin Gorda attracts visitors from neighbouring islands and The Baths are best enjoyed in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds.
