Texas

Set between the Red River boundary just north of Panhandle and the gulf coast in the south are breathtaking lakes, majestic mountains, vast plains, the desert and enchanting beaches. In Texas' large cities like Dallas, Houston, Austin and San Antonio it is possible to swop the bright lights for a day at the ranch at the drop of a cowboy hat, or soak up culture at a world-class art gallery before taking a stroll through a scenic park. Outside the urban enclaves Texas has 23-million acres of woodlands, including four national forests and 125 state parks, from the great pine forests of the south and east to the rugged mountains of the west.

Florida

Miami is the largest city in Florida and is home to soft white sand beaches, diverse and colourful neighbourhoods and many unique attractions. Its famous Art Deco district and Latin American quarter are constantly thronged with visitors, many of them passengers from the hundreds of cruise ships that come and go in the bustling port. Within easy access from Miami are the Everglades, a marshy grass plain resonating with wildlife and filled with alligators.

Florida is known as the 'Sunshine State' with good reason as the sun always shines and the resorts and hotels offer first class dining and accommodation, while attractions offer everything from insight into space exploration, world class rollercoaster's, insights into endangered wildlife and some magnificent beaches.

Nevada

Nevada leaves an image of dusty ghost towns, long empty roads and desolate deserts to the millions who pass through it on their way east to California. Lacking any natural assets, it is fortunate that 'Lady Luck' descended on this state to give hundreds of thousands of people a man-made reason for visiting. This is casino country, centred on the capital of kitsch, Las Vegas, and the other smaller towns where the main income earner is gambling. Carson, the sleepy state capital, has tree-lined streets and some handsome old buildings and hosts the Nevada State Museum, which covers the geology and natural history of the Great Basin desert: enough distraction for a few hours - but not much more. Reno is a smaller and less glitzy version of Las Vegas, packed with casinos and pawnshops, and has easy access to Lake Tahoe, over the border in California.
