Malindi
The dazzling white sandy beaches of Malindi are situated just 60 miles from Mombasa and the beach resort offers both a lazy and unashamedly hedonistic holiday to its visitors. For more energetic pursuits there is also some excellent fishing, with trips leaving early in search of barracuda, tuna and marlin before the heat of the day sets in. Malindi harbour also boasts the cross of Vasco da Gama, an authentic Portuguese relic found on the southern end of the harbour, which bears the Portuguese coat of arms and commemorates Da Gama's arrival in 1498. For snorkelling and scuba divers Watamu and Malindi Marine National Parks are protected areas just south of Malindi, with white coral beaches and stunning blue lagoons. The crystal clear sea of the marine parks draw holidaymakers to them, as unlike the resorts, the waters are not muddied by the Sabaki River. The abandoned 15th century Swahili town of Gedi is situated between the two marine parks and visitors can explore the ruins of the palace, mosques, houses, market place and pillared tombs.
