Pollensa (old Town)

Pollensa

The tranquil town of Pollensa is situated in the northeastern part of Mallorca and offers a peaceful and relaxing break from the tourism on the rest of the island. The town dates back to medieval times and was built inland to protect against pirate attacks. While the Puerto Pollensa harbour caters to visitors with relaxing beach holidays, the old town of Pollensa offers a variety of cultural and historical activities. The main square of Plaça Major is the central point for the surrounding medieval centres, which includes the austere looking Nostra Senyora dels Àngels church, a busy market and a variety of bars and cafes. Via Crucis or 'Way of the Cross' is an impressive stone stairway, bordered with ancient cypress trees, which leads to a small chapel that houses the Mare de Déu del Peu de la Creu statue and on Good Friday visitors can see the Davallament, where a figure of Jesus is carried down the steps in the soft glow of torchlight. Also nearby an eighteenth century monastery is an hour's walk from the historical town and is a beautiful place to take in the panoramic views of the area.
