Las Palmas
Famed as the staring point for each of Christopher Columbus' expeditions to the Americas, Las Palmas is full of ancient buildings and sites. Yet where the historical district of Vegueta is a reminder of the city's origins, dating back to 1478, the rest of Las Palmas is fast becoming a testament to all that can be expected of a modern tourist destination. As the captial of Gran Canaria, the city is perfectly situated between two golden beaches, making it popular with tourists and locals alike. A number of modern apartment blocks are springing up in the region, as well as all the restaurants, bars and shops you could hope to find in a cosmopolitan city.
