Information on Lanzarote

Measuring only thirty miles long and thirteen miles across, Lanzarote is one of the smallest of the Canary Islands. A volcanic island, it has been granted Biosphere Reserve status by UNESCO meaning that this natural habitat is protected from over-development. The desert-like climate makes it a great destination for Lanzarote holidaymakers looking for relaxation in beautiful surroundings. Whether staying at a Lanzarote resort, or in the Capital, be sure to explore some of the island’s attractions.

Attractions
Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote; although it is at heart a small fishing community without a lot to offer in the way of nightlife, visitors are drawn here by the beautiful El Reducto beach. Awarded the prestigious blue flag for cleanliness by the European Union, El Reducto is flanked by the San Gines lagoon where sunbathers can cool off in the placid water before relaxing on golden sands.

Hidden away in the corner of Arrecife is the Museum of Contemporary Art; an impressive collection of modern pieces set in a beautiful old building. More traditional art can be found in the Castle of San Jose where an unexpected collection of Picassos, Miro, Damaso, Bacon and Luis Feito are on permanent display. The fortress itself, built by King Carlos III of Spain between 1776-1779 is also well worth a look.

Volcanic National Park
Residents of Lanzarote are undoubtedly proud of their Timanfaya National Park; which is made unique in that it was actually built and developed by the locals themselves. Capitalising on the natural volcanic phenomena present on the island, visitors to the park can witness a variety of geothermal and geological wonders. A day of exploring geysers and 180 exotic plant species is nicely rounded off by a meal cooked in the hot steam vents themselves; truly an unforgettable experience. The park is open every day during peak seasons from ten in the morning until six in the evening, although you can also ring 928 84 0056 to double check.

Cactus Garden

This unusual attraction combines natural phenomena with artistic creations. Based in an old quarry, artist Cesar Manrique has created an artistic cactus plantation that has to be seen to be believed. There is also a restored windmill that visitors can explore at leisure. Opening times as the same as the volcanic park but again, you can ring 928 52 9397 to confirm before setting off.
