Bastia

Bastia

The major commercial centre of Corsica is the old town of Bastia. Located in the northeast the ancient town retains its old world charms, with a labyrinth of streets and alleyways leading to impressive Baroque churches and quaint pastel houses. The most picturesque region of the town is the Vieux Port, with colourful fishing boats floating in the harbour, which is surrounded by intricate historical houses and an impressive citadel perched high on the headland. Tourists fill the harbour, bringing a lively atmosphere to the harbour walkways, restaurants and bars and the town is also home to some pretty pebble beaches, which become crowded in the summer months. However visitors who explore further south will find the long stretches of enchanting sandy shores down the eastern coast of the island.
