Agios Nikolaos

Ayios Nikolaos

Áyios Nikólaos has developed over the last twenty years into an ideal holiday resort in Crete and a sudden burst of tourism has livened up the coastline. The quaint town remains a pleasant holiday location, despite the sudden influx of tourists and is ideally located for visitors to explore the eastern parts of Crete. The resort offers a taste of legendary Greece with the environs in the harbour being home to the Lake Voulismeni pool, which is believed to be bottomless and is surrounded in mysterious legends and tales. The town boasts an excellent Archaeological Museum, which houses relics from the Minoan era. The artefacts include some ancient artefacts dating back to 2300 BC from a cemetery of Aghia Photia, a Roman skull wearing a gold wreath from the first century AD and more than 1500 vases. The resort also offers some cultural excursions to the interior village of Kritsá, which is home to a fourteenth century frescoed church and to Spinalónga a fortified islet.
