Vilamoura
The purpose built resort of Vilamoura is located at the centre of the Algarve coast and offers a vast range of sports, activities and amenities to tourists on an Algarve holiday. The resort is built around a magnificent 1000-berth marina, alongside which are preserved some Roman ruins that were unearthed during construction back in the 1960s. A long, sandy beach, overlooked by quality hotels, self-catering apartments, numerous restaurants and shops, and a host of leisure facilities including a casino, lines the southern border. Further inland villas nestle in lush gardens between the golf courses. Vilamoura, which means 'Village of the Moors', is designed for pure pleasure for everyone, of any age or orientation. Nature has enhanced the resort with a temperate sunny climate and beautifully landscaped surroundings. Development has been environmentally friendly and tasteful.
The resort offers several modern shopping arcades, with chic designer boutiques, jewellers, shoe shops, sports outlets and a many other types of shops available to cater for just about everything. Those wanting to seek out the local colour can make an expedition to the Saturday market in nearby Loule.
Dining in the Vilamoura resort offers vast array of choice, from sophisticated restaurants serving delicious gourmet cuisine to fast food, ice cream parlours, coffee bars and chic cafes. For Chinese try the Golden Ming on Marina Plaza, or opt for perfect pizza and pasta at the Casa del Forno on the Largo do Cinema. Rosa's Cantina is the place to go for authentic Mexican food including enchiladas, tacos and burritos, washed down with icy cold Margaritas. For superb seafood opt for the Ostra D'Ouro Grill at the marina.
The nightlife in Vilamoura is flamboyant and lively, with a multitude of chic bars and pulsing nightclubs to entertain visitors. Everything from traditional Portuguese Fado to striptease and karaoke is there to be enjoyed. Vilamoura's international Casino is the haunt of celebrities, offering nightly dinner shows in addition to gambling tables, slot machines and bingo rooms.
There is never a dull moment in the resort of Vilamoura, with a vast range of activities available to tempt visitors from the relaxation of lazing on the luxurious beach. There are five 18-hole championship golf courses (international tournaments are often hosted here), lawn bowling club, tennis centre, riding school, and even clay pigeon shooting. Water sports, of course, abound, and big game fishing is very popular. There is also the cinema or casino to fall back on and sightseeing excursions are also available to nearby Loule with its Moorish castle and 13th-century church.
