Fethiye
Fethiye is a small picturesque port with an impressive historical background and the town currently occupies the site, which was once the ancient city of Telmessos. Fethiye is situated on the Turquoise Coast, which is a popular stretch of the Mediterranean and offers beautiful bays and landscapes. Although the town of Fethiye is busy with tourism, it retains its unspoilt rural atmosphere and herds of goats and sheep often block the roads on market day as they are taken to the bustling bazaar to be sold. Rock tombs that date back to the fourth century BC are carved into the hillside above the town, and the harbour is home to the relic of a medieval castle built by the knights of St John and a Roman amphitheatre. Dining in Fethiye is excellent, with a nice selection of restaurants on the harbour and through the winding streets of the old town. The beaches are dotted with several untouched coves and surrounded by the azure waters of the Mediterranean. Several small islands are situated offshore and can be visited via Gulets (wooden yachts) and the pine covered mountains in the region afford a range of activities to visitors, along with some spectacular views.
